Stewart S. Ackerman

March 16, 1924 — July 11, 2020

Stewart S. Ackerman, of Woodbury, NJ died on July 11, 2020 at age 96. He was the devoted husband of the late Catherine Ackerman. Survivors include daughters Patricia Rodenbaugh, Carol Franke, and Charlene Stewart; sons Ronald Ackerman and Brian Ackerman; grandchildren Kathleen, Steven, David, Tyler, Caitlin, and Blaine. Mr. Ackerman entered the military as an aviation cadet shortly after the U.S. entered World War II. He became one of the youngest pilots and aircraft commanders in the 8th Air Force Bomber Command, flying 39 combat missions over Western Europe and Germany. He was awarded the Air Medal 6 times, received the 303rd Bomb Group Distinguished Service award and was a Knight of the French Legion of Honor. After World War II, Mr. Ackerman served as an Instructor Pilot, flew ocean survey operations, and delivered military aircraft worldwide. After nearly ten years in service, he received a Disability Retirement due to sustaining major injuries in a bomber crash. He was a life member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society and the Military Officers Association of America. In 1984, he retired from a major national corporation. Mr. Ackerman’s cremated remains will be entombed with those of his beloved wife in the Columbarium of the 8th Air Force Memorial Garden of Folded Wings in Pooler, Georgia.
