Samuel Francis Johnson, age 88, went to be with the Lord on January 2, 2023. He is preceded in death by his wife, Hattie Mae, his parents, Robert and Corrine Johnson, sisters, Charlotte, Mildred and Phyllis, and brothers Robert Jr. and William. He leaves, to mourn, his siblings Adelle Johnson, Curtis Johnson (Deane), Ellen Pritchett (John)and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, along with his dearest of friends, Rosa Marquez (John) and their family.
Born July 16, 1934 in Caroline County, Virginia, Samuel (Francis) proudly served 20 years in the United States Air Force, serving in Vietnam as an Aircraft Mechanic and retired with the rank of Technical Sergeant (TSGT). As a civilian, he spent 15 years working for the Camden School District as Main Boiler Controller and Custodian Supervisor. Later, he went on to devote 16 years as a volunteer for the Inspira Heath System.
Samuel enjoyed spending time outside landscaping and gardening. He enjoyed sports but especially watching football. He loved spending time with his best friend, Rosa who would later become his caregiver, and her family with whom he adopted the title “Uncle Sam”. He loved Spanish food and would often joke that eating it did not seem to help him speak it. He had an even greater love of sweets and was guilty on many occasions of eating an entire pie in one day! As his health declined over time, he continued to enjoy the lively company of his best friend’s grandchildren, Mason and Marlies, always laughing at how diligently they’d remind him to drink his water to stay hydrated. Uncle Sam will be forever missed but never forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made, in Samuel’s honor, to Inspira Health Foundation, in support of the Volunteer Services Department, located at Inspira’s Medical Center in Vineland, 159 Bridgeton Pike, Mullica Hill, NJ 08062. Additionally, donations can be made at inspirafoundation.org.
