Mrinal “Mike” Som passed away on February 13, 2021 at the age of 82 surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest. Mrinal grew up in Kolkata, India where he attended Jadavpur University and received a degree in Chemical Engineering. He went on to earn his MBA at the Asian Institute of Management in Manila, Philippines. He also attended the executive management program at Harvard University in Cambridge, USA. The majority of his career was spent at DCPL, and later Kuljian Corporation, their US branch. Upon arriving in the US in 1985, he Americanized his name from Mrinal to Mike. His boss Shadhan Dutta proclaimed, “the greatest loss for DCPL is Mrinal Som, and the greatest gain for Kuljian Corporation is Mike Som.” His 60 year career spanned the edges of the globe and he worked tirelessly to exceed all expectations. Mrinal was also devoted family man. As the eldest child, he played an important role in creating stability for his mother, his brothers and his sisters during their early years. He met his wife, Suchitra (“Dolon”) after returning from his studies in Manila. They were married and had two children, Jeet and Joy (“Joe”). Mrinal was an active member of the Bengali Cultural Society of South Jersey and fixture at every puja and “Annual Function”. He held in high regard his dear friend and brother-in-law Paritosh. After his retirement, he enjoyed writing dramas, playing golf with his sons, traveling with his wife, and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife (Dolon), 2 sons (Jeet and Joy), daughter-in-law (Catie), grandchildren (Aiden & Henry), brothers (Kumar and Abhijit), sisters (Srimati and Mandira), nieces and nephews.
