Mitra Tarafdar

April 10, 1943 — May 19, 2024

Mitra Tarafdar, age 81 of Cherry Hill, NJ, passed away on May 19, 2024, at her home

surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Dhaka, Undivided India to the late

Paresh Chandra Roy and Kanak Prabha Roy (nee Dutta Roy). Mitra moved to the US

in 1979 because of her husband’s job, and after her husband passed away many

years ago when she was still in her 40s, Mitra picked herself up, found a job to make

a living, bought a condo she called home for almost 30 years, and put her son

through college. She was a sweet and soft-spoken person who loved everyone and

never raised her voice, but she also possessed a steely resolve and stubborn streak

that enabled her to live a long life according to her own terms. She was fiercely

independent and though she welcomed advice, she ultimately made her own

decisions and did it her own way.

She adored and had such pride for her grandkids (her “grands”), and it warmed her

heart to be “all together” or to hear us ask for seconds of her cooking. She loved

socializing with her many loving friends in the area and took joy in talking every day

with her siblings in India with whom she shared all aspects of her life. She was a

foody but had a soft spot for fried chicken, strawberry ice cream, and IPAs. She

also enjoyed Indian soap operas and loved talking about the plot intricacies with her

friends.

Mitra is predeceased by her husband, Satyabrata Tarafdar; brother, Chiranjit Roy;

and brother-in-law, Mrinal Kanti Roy Chowdhury.

She is survived by her son, Sandip Tarafdar; daughter-in-law, Carly; grandchildren,

Satya (“Mama”) and Caden (“Cade”); siblings, Jharna Roy Chowdhury, Amitabha Roy

(Debjani), and Abhijit Roy (Kalyani); sister-in-law, Atreyi Roy; and many loving

nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
