Mary Ellen (Maureen) McCarthy was born in New York City in 1944 to Thomas and Bridie Fitzgerald. Her parents immigrated from Ireland to the United States before World War II. To her Irish friends and family, she was known as Maureen.

Mary grew up in an apartment in upper Manhattan near Central Park where she learned to ride and developed a life-long love of horses. She graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC with an associate degree.

Mary worked as a keypunch operator while she studied computers at NYU and later worked with a computer consulting firm.

In 1970, Mary married Kevin P. Crowley. She remained married to Kevin until 1981, when he died in a motor vehicle accident.

In 1983, Mary married Joseph C. McCarthy. She has two children from this marriage, Joseph Thomas, and Thomas Andrew.

In 1986, the McCarthy family relocated from Manhattan to Atco, NJ. In NJ she worked various sales jobs, including computer sales, until 1993 when she retired to become a full-time supermom. She was a den mother for Cub Scout Pack 159 for three years and spent time giving riding lessons.

On February 8, 2024, she died at home under hospice care with both sons and her husband at her side. Mary is survived by her two sons, Joseph and Thomas, and her husband Joseph.

A viewing was held in the Leroy P. Wooster Funeral Home and Crematory on February 12, 2024. This was followed by a service her brother-in-law Pastor Maurice McCarthy conducted. Mary was buried in the Atco Cemetery on Bartram Avenue in Atco.
