Lena Tomasco, 97, passed away peacefully at her home on Chestnut Street, surrounded by family, from congestive heart failure on December 30, 2024. A life-long resident of Hammonton, she was born May 31, 1927, into the Lucca family of South First Road. Daughter of Angelina and Frank Lucca, originally from Italy, her family had 12 brothers and sisters.
Shortly after World War II, she married Joseph Tomasco of Hammonton, a WWII Army veteran. They had their house built on Chestnut Street in 1946. There are many memories of Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve dinners throughout the years with large numbers of family in that small kitchen. Her husband, 86, passed away in March of 2004. While he played drums with the Melody Men band in South Jersey through 1980, she often attended parties and events with the other band wives.
She worked at the Kimble Glass Manufacturing Company in Vineland, NJ until retiring in the early 1980s. When much younger, she ice-skated with her husband and friends, telling stories of large groups doing various patterns crisscrossing and leaping over each other. She used to say “it’s a miracle we survived.” Later in life, she enjoyed going to movies, eating out, bowling, line dancing, and attending church with her friends. For a period, she attended the Hammonton VFW Post #1026 Monday evening dinners, helping in the kitchen at times. Lena could be seen taking long walks around town and to the Hammonton Lake.
Early in life, she was a member of the St. Martin’s de Porres Catholic Church in Hammonton. Later, she was a member of the Solid Rock Baptist Church in Berlin, NJ, and attended until she could no longer. Her Holy Father and Jesus Christ was a large part of her life.
Lena is predeceased by her husband, Joseph Tomasco of Hammonton.
She is survived by her sister, Marie Strano (Lucca) of Hammonton, her nephew Michael and his wife Teresa of Chantilly, Virginia, and their children Joseph and Stephanie. She is also survived by many nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, and grand-nieces. For the past several years while living at home, her grand-nephew Barry Jacobs played a great part in her life helping her daily at her home.
Per her wishes, there will be no funeral services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Solid Rock Baptist Church at 420 S. White Horse Pike, Berlin, NJ 08009 or by clicking here .
