Laurelle A. Cummings, formerly of Atco, NJ, passed away peacefully on August 17 th , 2022 at the age of 83. She was pre-deceased by her husband Frank and son Billy and is survived by her loving children, Lynne & Mike Baran, Sherill & Jim Beatty, Debra & John Countey, Frank & Lynn Cummings, Brenda & Frank Arico, Joel Fishbein, and Donald Cummings as well has 23 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Laurelle was born in Pittsburgh PA, and grew up in Oaklyn, NJ, graduating from Collingswood High School in 1956. She lived much of her life, in Southern New Jersey in Oaklyn, Barrington, Cherry Hill and Waterford Township, where she developed great life-long friends, became politically and socially active and enjoyed traveling and musical theater.
She took great pride in her life-long career in health services, working at many nonprofits including Goodwill Industries, American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, and Lighthouse Hospice. Many of her positions focused on volunteer services and public relations.
She continued her service to the community by serving on local and county government as she was elected to Waterford Township Committee for 9 years where she served as mayor in 1994 and 1998. She then was elected to the Camden County Freeholder Board for 6 years where she was a strong advocate for environmental issues, founder of the Boathouse Project at Cooper River Park, and started initiatives including an annual seminar for Caregivers of the Elderly.
Her passion for volunteerism was expressed in her membership and participation in many community organizations. Serving as past president of the Barrington Junior Women’s Club, Past Matron of Athene Chapter, OES, Waterford Township Civics and Events Association, WT Democrat Club, Camden County Commission for Women, Chair of the Volunteer Center of Camden County Advisory Board, Member of the Board of Trustees at Mainstage, Inc. and President of the Camden County Chapter of the NJ Federation of Democratic Women.
Laurelle was a strong role model for the women in her family as well as many women in the community. She will forever be remembered for bringing laughter and sunshine to many and making her little part of the world better off than it was before she arrived.
The viewing will be held at the Leroy P. Wooster Funeral Home and Crematory, 441 White Horse Pike, Atco, NJ on Tuesday, August 23 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM with an OES ceremony beginning at 7:30 pm and Wednesday, August 24 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A celebration of life service will begin at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Berlin Cemetery, Berlin, NJ.
