John A. Derrico of Berlin, NJ passed away on October 14, 2024 at the age of 81. He was survived by his children, Kate McGlaughlin (Matt) and Michael Derrico, his grandsons Jack and Colin McGlaughlin, his brother Luca Derrico, his nephews Nick, John, and Tim Derrico, and his great-niece Amelia Derrico. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Nicholas and Angela Derrico, and his sister, Josephine Troy Campbell.
John was born and raised in the Bronx, surrounded by his extended family in a community of Italian immigrants, and graduated from Fordham University with a degree in finance. While in graduate school at St. John’s University, he served in the Army as an intelligence analyst during the Vietnam War, receiving honors and commendations for his service while stationed in Saigon. After returning home, John had a long and successful career in finance and real estate, working as a federal bank examiner for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, as a bank vice president, and in real estate development. He relocated to New Jersey from New York City in the 1980s, where he and his then-wife, Maryann, raised their children.
John was an encyclopedia of knowledge about the things he loved. He could tell you every obscure detail about The Lord of the Rings, Sherlock Holmes, and Game of Thrones and answer any question about numbers or finance before you even finished asking. He loved history, especially medieval history and castles, and spent hours using his history and math skills to help his kids with their school projects. John was a devoted and caring dad who enjoyed sharing his interests with his children, never missed a game or an event, and was always happy to drop off a car full of his kids’ friends at the end of the night. He adored his grandsons, and could often be found swordfighting, watching movies, sneaking them extra cannoli and donuts, and helping them fill their piggy banks with change.
When John wasn’t walking a job site or spending time with his family, you could almost certainly find him on the golf course or at the movies. From the time he was a child, John loved going to the movie theater to see anything from a new release to the re-release of a classic. He never turned down a midnight showing to be among the first to see an eagerly anticipated film, and would gladly go back to see it again if you couldn’t go with him the first time.
John was generous, funny, and kind, and he will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Veteran’s Haven South, to help veterans receive the support they need to heal and thrive after returning from combat, or to Samaritan Hospice by clicking this link , in honor of the care they provided in John’s final days.
