Jawaharlal Chakraborty

August 24, 1955 — March 6, 2024

Jawahar Lal Chakraborty, 68, of Voorhees, New Jersey passed away peacefully on March 6th, 2024, with loved ones by his side. Known as "Ronju" to his friends and family, he was born on Vivekananda Road in Calcutta, India to Ramesh and Juthika Chakraborty on August 24, 1955 before moving to New Delhi and then Voorhees, New Jersey.

Ronju graduated from St. Xavier's High School and then from Venkateshwara College with a Bachelors of Commerce, going on to earn a Masters in Economics, and a diploma in Computer Science. He leveraged his degrees to build a career in international shipping, often travelling overseas for work. An avid sports fan and athlete, Ronju excelled in soccer, cricket, and field hockey throughout high school and college, captaining teams and being one of a select few from New Delhi to be chosen for the regional soccer team. He also took up boxing as a heavyweight with ease. Ronju passed his love of sports on to his children, coaching soccer games and showing support at track meets and tae kwon do tournaments.

After his marriage to Sunita Das in 1987 and the birth of his children, Ronju moved his family to Philadelphia before finally settling in Voorhees, New Jersey. There the family was welcomed by the Bengali community, allowing them to establish deep roots and build close friendships that Ronju held dear until the time of his passing. Ronju's favorite pastime was to watch movies and sports games with his brothers and engaging in vigorous debate over their favorite teams. Throughout his life, Ronju championed equity for all people and spoke out against injustice and prejudice in all its forms.

Ronju is survived by his wife; son Tiyash Chakraborty; daughter Trisha Chakraborty; son in law Cody Cullens; brothers Amitabha Chakraborti (Monica), Debabrata Chakraborty (Roma Debabrata), Subhas Chakraborty, and Shibaji Chakraborty; his sisters in law Shanti Chakravorti, Sujata Das, Rochita Das (Suprabhat), and Anita Das; and his brother-in-law, Ashoke Chatterjee. He is also survived by four nephews, five nieces, four grand nephews, six grand nieces, and many cousins, aunts and uncles.

He joins his beloved parents and his siblings, Partha Chakravorti and Lakshmi Chatterjee, at rest.
