James E. Gunning, Sr.

February 13, 1950 — July 3, 2024

In loving memory of James Gunning Sr., beloved husband, father and grandfather who passed away peacefully on July 3, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Camden, NJ, Jim lived in various towns during his early life but made Winslow his home for the last 52 years where he raised his family with his loving wife Dorothy. Jim met Dorothy Nickerson in 1966 and they married in 1967. She remained the love of his life for 57 years.

Jim had a humble upbringing and worked from a very young age. He was determined to provide a better life for him and his family. He started out as a union pipefitter at the age of 18. He spent many years working as a union pipefitter until 1986 when he made a pivotal decision to change careers. He started his own business: James E. Gunning Sr. Custom Wallcovering and Painting and never looked back. His business thrived for 25 years where he had a base of customers that appreciated his talent. Known for being fastidious, he treated his customer’s homes like he treated his own. He had many repeat customers through the years which is a testament to just how much his talent and commitment was recognized and appreciated.

Jim retired in 2008 and focused his remaining years on enjoying retired life with his loving wife and his cats. He loved his cats and Disney World. He and his wife had annual passes to Disney World and visited every year.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy and son, James (Leah) Gunning and siblings, William Gunning, Geraldine Reilly, John Gunning and Debbie Hand.

Jim was preceded in death by his son, Steven Gunning, parents, William and Lillian (Slugg) Gunning and siblings, Michael Gunning, Robert Gunning and Maryann Redfield.

He is also survived and cherished by his grandchildren, Aiden, Alyssa, Ashton, Brianna and Ryan Gunning.

Jim will be remembered for a quick wit and great sense of humor. He will also be remembered as a determined person who knew what he wanted and didn’t waiver in accomplishing his goals. Most of all, Jim will be remembered for being a dedicated family man. His world revolved around his family which was never more evident than towards the end of his life. He didn’t worry about himself but instead worried about his family.

We are all ok so rest in peace and live on through the love and memories you shared with us all.

Pop Pop is going home!
