Herbert H. Wood, Jr.
January 23, 1937 – September 16, 2024
Herbert H. Wood, Jr., loving husband to Eleanor (Lang) Wood, whom he shared 68 years of marriage with, passed away at the age of 87 in Atco, NJ, on Monday, September 16, 2024.
Herb was born in Philadelphia, PA, in 1937, to Herbert H. Wood, Sr. and Anita (Hurter) Wood. He moved to Atco, where he met and later married his high school sweetheart. Starting in the 8 th grade, Herb would carry Ellie’s books home from school for her. Herb graduated from Overbrook Regional High School in 1957 before joining the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Panama. Following his return from the military, he began his career as an electrician, working at the Philadelphia shipyards and most recently at Owens Corning Fiberglass.
Herb enjoyed many camping trips to Cherrystone campground in VA, crabbing, bird watching, and fishing the many bays and streams of NJ with his family. In addition, Herb loved to work jigsaw puzzles in his free time and was very proud of his tomato garden. But nothing made him happier than having his grandchildren and great-grandchildren fall asleep on his lap. He will be dearly missed by all but
imparted many life lessons to them.
Herb was a devoted and cherished husband to his beautiful wife, Ellie, and a proud father to three children: John Wood (Carla Franceski Wood), Lancaster, PA, Herbert Wood III (Melody Wood), Woodstown, NJ, and Colleen Raco (Jim Duda), Hammonton,
NJ. Herb took immense pride in being Pop-Pop to eight grandchildren: Stephanie Wood, Lindsey Thomas, Kimberly Ruocco, Heather Chew, Melissa Raco, Joseph Raco, Bryan Wood and Sarah Wood; and six great-grandchildren: Kayla Wood, Leah
Butcher, Dylan and Colin Thomas, and Kamilla and Colston Chew. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia McSorley (Richard). Herb was preceded in death by his parents and older brother John (Jack) Wood.
