George Anthony Articolo

September 3, 1939 — October 12, 2021

George A. Articolo, Ph.D, age 82, of Marlton NJ passed away on October 12, 2021. George is survived by his three children: Nancy Anne DiMeglio (David), Dr. Glenn A. Articolo (Dr. Amy), and Dr. Laurence C. Articolo and his five grandchildren: David, Brandon, and Dr. Matthew DiMeglio (Marissa), Lauren and Leah Articolo, former wife Anna (née Pietropaolo) Raab and nephews Roger and Ryan Fallon of his deceased sister Linda Fallon. Professor, author, inventor and musician, George was born in Schenectady, NY to the late A. George and Nancy (née Martorelli) Articolo. Raised in a post-depression conservative household, the value of education was instilled; George excelled in school while music was his social outlet. After graduating Mont Pleasant High School in 1957, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1961 and received his PhD at Temple University in physics in 1963. George joined the faculty of the Department of Mathematics at Rutgers University in Camden in 1963. He was professor of Mathematics, served as Chairman of the Department and became Professor Emeritus after 40 years of teaching. During this time, he also published many research papers as well as two books: Partial Differential Equations (with Maple) and Mathematical Concepts in Music. An annual award for Rutgers undergraduates, the Francis Falcon Scholarship, was given in his honor to the highest performing student specializing in Applied Mathematics. In 2012, another award in his name was established—the George A. Articolo Applied Mathematics Prize. George utilized his keen understanding of electronics and physics, he invented, patented and manufactured an electronic liquid densitometer which he sold through the company he founded, Sundial Analytics. He continued to manufacture the devices through his 80th birthday until he sold the design license. They are still in production and used today for their unparalleled durability and accuracy. “G-pop" spent much of his time post-retirement with family dispensing many whimsical sayings, bestowing wisdom and advice. His professional and social connections as well as his many former students in the area made him well known, especially for his warm disposition outside of the Rutgers classroom. Although serious and stern professionally, George was always inviting socially, with a hello and funny line for everyone, never had an unkind word to say about anyone, and was indeed a popular guy. George enjoyed playing golf, tennis and occasionally “taking his horn" (saxophone) to local establishments such as Annata Wine Bar, sometimes joining up with the jazz band he formed, Manhattan Swing Ensemble. He was an avid traveler and was especially fond of his annual trips to Lake George and Mariott Grand Vista Orlando. Friends and relatives are welcome to a visitation with his family on Saturday, October 23rd from 10:00am to 1:00pm at the LeRoy P. Wooster Funeral Home and Crematory, 441 White Horse Pike, Atco, NJ 08004. Funeral Liturgy will begin at 1:00pm. Interment will take place at Greenmount Cemetery in Hammonton, NJ.
