Evelyn “Baby Donawa” Williams passed away peacefully on Sunday afternoon, December 25th, 2022, at Berlin Health and Rehab Center. She was three days shy of her 96th Birthday. Born in Trinidad, West Indies on December 28th, 1926, to parents Ulric & Amy Donawa, she was the youngest of seven children, hence the “Baby” moniker.
Affectionately called Baby by both friends and family, she was full of life. Her witty conversation and sparkling personality were a magnet for people, old and young alike. She had many friends and was the unofficial annual recipient of the Entertainer of the Year award for many decades. An accomplished Bridge, Whist and Pinochle player, few were able to compete successfully against her.
She married William Lee Daniels in 1952 after a very short, whirlwind courtship. Lee and Debbie were born from that union. She later married George Williams who she was with for over twenty-five years until they parted in 1987.
From the early days of Club 209, Her one man led social club, Baby planned live band dances and Trinidad Independence Day boat rides, that few wanted to miss. Her yearly Carnival costume party was a favorite of friends and family and others who wouldn’t miss this annual spectacular event. Known for her skills on the dance floor, she was often the life of the party.
She loved her title of ‘Auntie Baby” and cherished her many nieces and nephews. She enjoyed traveling and experiencing new adventures and meeting new people. She was often referred to as Esther Williams the great American Swimmer, as she too was an avid swimmer. She was able to stay afloat and glide across the water with a scotch and soda in her hand, without spilling a drop! This was witnessed by the many who attended the countless Pool parties she hosted.
To celebrate her wonderful life a party to rival some of her best, will be held on a future date!
Baby is survived by her loving and devoted daughter Debbie Sutton, preceded in death by her son Lee Daniels. Also survived by her Grandchildren, Brandon, Kevin, Andrea, Rufus, and his wife Olivia. Great Grandchildren, Bianca & Odin along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and so many others touched along the way by her vitality and zest for life!
