Eugene Henry Ewan was born on February 5, 1932, and died on May 24, 2024, at the age of 92. A life-long resident of Atco, NJ, Gene was active in the Atco Presbyterian church where he served as organist (1951-1954). He attained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University, Camden, NJ (1954), then “volunteered” for service in the US Army during the Korean War. Trained as a radio controller, he and his new bride, Catherine Stannard Ewan, were stationed in the Panama Canal Zone (1955-1957). After two years of active duty, Gene returned to the states along with Cathy, 2 pet monkeys, a parrot, and a macaw. He earned a master’s degree in education from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA (1962), served as church organist at the Atco Methodist Church (1957-1967), and contracted with Overbrook Regional Senior High School in Pine Hill, NJ as a teacher ... a career he dedicated himself to for 34 years. “Mr. Ewan,” who taught social studies and modern history, hosted a “holiday open house” for all his students each Christmas, and delighted in sharing his brand of (poor) humor with countless students over the years.
He was a lifelong model train collector who designed and built an extensive outdoor model railway in his backyard complete with koi pond and fountain; part of his attic is an all-Marklin city with trains, cars, working fountains, and a brewery. Gene was also an avid fan of old-time radio programs and regularly attended annual conventions in Cincinnati. He was quite knowledgeable about the Jersey Pine Barrens and enjoyed year-round Jeep rides out in the woods with family and friends.
Gene was recovering from 3 compression fractures in his lumbar spine when he contracted COVID in September 2023; in October, he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, which he fought valiantly until the end. He retained presence of mind up until his final hours when he passed peacefully at home surrounded by his family.
Gene is predeceased by his parents, Richard C. Ewan, Sr. and Irwina (Warner) Ewan; first and second wives, Catherine (Stannard) Ewan and Delores (McKeown) Ewan; brother, Harold Ewan and son, Denis Ewan.
He is survived by his wife, Frances (Hayes) (Maier) Ewan; brother, Ret. Lt. Col. Richard C. Ewan, II; son, David Ewan; daughter, Pamela Ewan, and grandson Isaac Denis Ewan.
In accordance with his wishes a Memorial Service / Life Celebration will be held at a later date.
