The man, the myth, the nose, the comb-over, Dwight Hlustick, a beloved uncle, “step-monster”, and friend to many in New Jersey and Virginia, passed away on Thursday, September 30th, 2021 after a brief illness. For one so short in height, he touched the lives of many, including the fish he caught on his many fishing trips and at Harris Teeter, or the deer he hit with his car and with his gun. He was a collector of the unusual, whether it be antique guns, fishing rods, tennis rackets, bicycles, motorcycles, cars, or boats. A graduate of Rutgers University, Dwight worked at the EPA for 32 years as an Environmental Engineer, was a member of Fairfax Rod and Gun Club for 26 years, and was a long-time community activist, advocating for the rights of cyclists in his community and the landscaping in his development. Even though he was a transplant to the DC area, he maintained his love for the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. He went so far as to emblazon the Eagles emblem on his Eagles green Mini Cooper. On his many travels, both at home and abroad, he made connections and friends that lasted a lifetime. He could be found cycling around Arlington and Alexandria, running the Ram Bash with his friends at Fairfax Rod and Gun Club, playing Scrabble with his courtyard buddies at Fairlington Villages, watching British murder mysteries, including all 22 seasons of Midsomer Murders, hanging out with his longtime buddies from the EPA, or entertaining the Gaggle for their random and imposing visits that he secretly loved. No matter where he was though, everything stopped when Jeopardy came on TV. Even with his very busy social schedule, he ALWAYS made time for his family, especially his great nieces and nephew, who he adored more than anything in the world. He is preceded in death by his parents, Rose and John Hlustick, his sister, Dale Linda Lechler, and his best friend and brother-in-law, Paul Lechler. He is.survived by his nieces, Wendy Lingle (Steve), Connie Lechler (Rich), and Jenn Lechler, his great nieces, Autumn, Vivien, and Olive, his great nephew, Patrick, his honorary nieces aka “the Gaggle” (Kimtasha, Robyne, “Meadvin”, and Shanna), and his many, many friends.
