Dr. Dilip K. Ghosh

February 6, 1942 — January 2, 2024

Dr. Dilip K. Ghosh, an esteemed professor of finance, passed away in the early hours of the morning on January 2nd, 2024. He was 81 years old.

The long-time editor of The International Journal of Finance, Dr. Ghosh rose from his early life in Bhalia, West Bengal where he was a talented, amateur soccer player to become a highly sought-after speaker and presenter at economics and finance conferences all over the world. Throughout his career, he published over 20 books and over 40 articles, traveled to over 60 countries, served as a director and advisor to stock exchanges, rubbed elbows with Nobel Laureates, met Prime Ministers, and received rave reviews and gratitude from his students who appreciated his expertise and passion for the subject matter.

After a whirlwind romance, spanning both years and continents, he won the heart of his great love Shyamasri (Dasgupta). After graduating from Presidency College in India, he emigrated to the United States to attend graduate school. After earning his MBA at the University of Rochester and his PhD from the SUNY Buffalo, the now married couple settled in Cherry Hill, NJ where they have lived since 1978.

He had a distinguished career in which he taught all over the globe including positions at universities in Tunisia, Bulgaria, South Korea, China, Egypt, Malaysia, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, and Trinidad & Tobago, among many domestic posts. Above all, though, Dr. Ghosh was most proud of his grandchildren; Jacob, Dinia, and Alexander, and his daughters, Dipasri who followed in his footsteps as a professor of finance and Debasri, who works in leadership roles in non-profit organizations working for social change.

A beloved and gregarious member of the Bengali community of South Jersey, Dr. Ghosh loved to tell stories of his travels, his daughters’ accomplishments, and of the dazzling weddings he threw for both of them. He was a mentor and trusted resource for many in the Bengali community.

He scribbled financial equations with any writing utensil on any surface he could find. His mind was always alive with ideas. He was constantly on the phone with treasured friends and colleagues. He charmed everyone who crossed his path. To call him larger than life would be an understatement.

Dr. Ghosh is survived by his wife Shyamasri, with whom he celebrated 50 cherished years of marriage; his daughters Dipasri and Debasri; his grandchildren Jacob, Dinia, and Alexander; his sons-in-law Anthony and Daniel; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. He was also like a father to his state-side nieces and nephew – Bushu, Gulu and Pupa. In the last few weeks of his life, he was delighted to learn that he had another granddaughter on the way, a sister to Dinia.

He will be truly and profoundly missed by all who knew him.
