Doris E. Broome

October 12, 1939 — January 11, 2025

Doris E. Broome (nee Heggan), age 85 of Tansboro, NJ, surrounded by her family, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on January 11, 2025. Beloved wife of the late John (Jack) L. Broome, cherished mother of Doris E. Ruggeri (Anthony D.), proud grandmother of Anthony T. Ruggeri (Meghan) and Christopher J. Ruggeri (Kirsten), loving great grandmother of Lilah J. and Nathan J. Ruggeri.

Doris was born in Waterford on October 12, 1939, to her wonderful parents, the late Alexander and Mary Heggan. She was the second to the youngest of six children. Doris adored her siblings and treasured the memories they made together. She is predeceased by her dear sister, Mary (Warren), and dear brothers, Eddie (Alma), Allie (Stella), and Charles. She is survived by her dear brother, Paul and many loving nieces and nephews.

As a young girl she was raised to understand the importance of getting a good education. Doris always did very well in school while involving herself in many school and community activities. She was in the Girl Scouts and 4-H Club. She attended the Waterford Presbyterian Church where she played the piano for the Youth Group. In High School, she was on student council and the yearbook committee. Doris graduated from Lower Camden County Regional in 1957 as Salutatorian of her class. When she moved from her hometown Waterford to Tansboro she met the love of her life, John (Jack) Broome. They married, and 5 years later were excited to build their home where they happily resided in Tansboro.

While being a wonderful wife and mother, Doris continued her education at Glassboro State College (now Rowan University). She graduated with honors and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. Her degree led her to her profession as a dedicated 6th grade teacher at Berlin Community School. She retired after 15 years of teaching to be able to spend more time with family and to be able to give back more to her community. She was an active member of the Tansboro Fire Ladies for many years, in which she held several offices. She was also a proud member of the Atco American Legion. Later in years, she dedicated most of her time as a faithful board member of the Tansboro Trinity United Methodist Church. She really loved her church family and thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship there.

Doris hosted many fun times over the years. She was great at throwing work parties, holiday gatherings, and picnics by the pool, especially at the annual Father’s Day Pool Party. She loved gardening, traveling and baking. One of her favorite vacation spots for over 25 years was Fort Meyers, Florida where she and her husband spent time enjoying the beautiful beaches and meeting up with friends.

Doris had immense passion and unending generosity for her family. As a devoted mother, Doris raised her daughter, Doris, with boundless love and support. She cherished taking care of and attending the activities of her grandchildren, Anthony and Christopher. She thoroughly enjoyed being a great-grandmother too. She adored Lilah and Nathan. You could always see the happiness in her smile and laughter as she read and sang to them.

Doris will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her faithful, kind, loving spirit and joy for life will always be remembered.
