It is with great sadness that we announce Dilip K. Sen, 76, passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 21, 2025 at his home in Mount Laurel, NJ.
Dilip was born on January 4, 1949 to Pasupati and Manimala Sen in Chandernagore, West Bengal, India. He graduated from the Ramakrishna Mission in Baranagar, Kolkata, and then continued his studies at the University of Calcutta, where he earned a B.Sc in Physics from Scottish Church College and a B.Tech and M.Tech in Radiophysics from Science College. He then accepted a national scholarship from the government of Canada and completed a Master’s in Electrical Engineering from the University of Ottawa and a PhD in Operations Research from the University of Waterloo. A pioneer in applied fuzzy logic, Dilip worked as a logistics specialist, management scientist, and operations research fellow for companies including ANR, Ryder PIE, Conrail, and Norfolk Southern. He especially enjoyed his work as an industrial consultant to academic projects at Princeton University and Georgia Tech.
Late in graduate school, Dilip met his wife Manjula and they were married on October 9, 1974. The couple’s first son, Amitav, was born in 1977 and they welcomed their second son, Arunav, in 1982. Dilip eventually settled his family in Mount Laurel, NJ in 1987, and would grow to consider it and the South Jersey community his second home. He never lost his Indian roots however, and maintained close relationships with his siblings, in-laws, and many nieces and nephews in West Bengal, traveling often to see them.
Despite his formidable intellect, people knew Dilip as a humble, sweet-natured man, eager to join in a laugh or offer a helping hand. He was a passionate supporter of FC Barcelona, the Philadelphia Eagles, and India’s efforts in International Cricket. Dilip also enjoyed photography, tinkering on his beloved 1997 BMW 5 series, and could never refuse a bite with his family and friends. He was proud to tutor young students in math and science throughout his life, and many, including his own sons, are grateful for his guidance and influence.
Dilip is survived by his wife Manjula and two sons Amitav and Arunav. His kind, resilient spirit as a son, brother, husband, father, neighbor, teacher, and friend will be deeply missed.
