Catherine Loretta Preston

Catherine Loretta Preston (nee McDermott), age 87, passed away on Wednesday July 13, 2022.  She was married to Roy E. Preston on December 3, 1955, until his death on October 16, 2007.

Catherine was born in the Bronx, NY on April 2, 1935, and lived there until 1968. She then moved to New Jersey and lived in various places including Penns Grove, Atlantic City, Absecon, and Chesilhurst, NJ with her son James for the last 15 years since her retirement.

Catherine, aka “Mickey” to close friends and family, was a top telephone switchboard operator for AT&T in Manhattan, NY in her early career, and worked 20 years in the Atlantic City casino industry, retiring from Harrah’s Casino Security Department in 2007.

Family was extremely important to her, from her immediate family, grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, and extended families. She loved every opportunity to attend a family event, or host a big family BBQ on the deck, as well as holiday and Sunday dinners with her grandchildren and family. Her family and friends were her world.

She is survived by her son James Preston (Nila Brady and son Brandon Brady); daughter Loretta McDonough (Thomas), grandchildren Michael Howey (Kate), Derrick Kunzer (Deborah), Christopher Kunzer, Searlait McDonough, and Timothy McDonough; great-grandchildren Alivia Howey, Alex Karwowski, and Ilyana Kunzer. She is also survived and will be sadly missed by her cousin George and Marie Hafner; sisters in law Joyce Waldron, Patti Leary, and Geraldine Preston; brothers in law Paul Preston and Jerry Preston (Marie), and scores of other extended family members.

She is predeceased by her mother Loretta Mahoney (nee Kyle), stepfather George Mahoney, aunt Charlotte Hafner (nee Kyle), uncle George Hafner, grandfather George Kyle, grandmother Catherine Kyle (nee O’Connor), great grandparents Matthew and Sarah Kyle, infant granddaughter Caitlin Mullin, brother Phillip McDermott, niece Margaret Ruggiero (nee McDermott), brother in law Gene Preston, and sisters in law Glenda Rudisill, Rochelle Moreland, and Sue Preston.

A viewing will be held on Tuesday July 19, 2022, from 12:00 to 2:00 pm at the Leroy P. Wooster Funeral Home and Crematory, 441 White Horse Pike, Atco, NJ. A prayer service will begin at 2:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be held privately at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx NY.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society https://donate3.cancer.org/ , or American Lung Association https://action.lung.org/ .
