Amitabha Gangopadhyay

April 11, 1945 — February 16, 2021

Amitabha Gangopadhyay, April 11, 1943 – February 16, 2021. Amitabha Gangopadhyay was a loving and dedicated husband, dad, grandfather and friend. He left this world after a brave battle against COVID-19 on February 16, 2021. He was 77. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sumita, his son Neel, daughter-in-law Lizzie and grandson Harry. He was born to Abani Mohan and Binapani Ganguly on April 11, 1943. After graduating from high school, Amitabha earned his bachelor’s degree at Bengal Engineering College and later completed graduate studies at Drexel University. As a young man, he chased his dreams of living abroad, moving to London in 1967 and then to the United States in 1971. He worked for over a half century as a structural engineer and oversaw projects as diverse as hospitals, bridges and power plants. While he was dedicated to his work, his true passion was his devotion to his family. With his wife and son, he traveled domestically and internationally, played tennis, attended sporting events and enjoyed national parks while exploring the open, scenic roads of the West. He was a leader by example, showing what it meant to be a devout, caring father. When his college age son forgot his suit for an important job interview, he drove two and a half hours, reached his son 15 minutes before the interview, dropped off the suit and headed home. His tireless dedication to his family, love for sports and passion for travel are enduring legacies. In recent years, his pride and joy was his grandson. As a grandfather, he gave the gifts that were the most fun and had lasting impact. Last year he gifted his grandson his first Lego set, which sparked a love for building, and this fall, he assembled his grandson’s first bike without training wheels. His grandson loved when he found coins behind his ear and absolutely adored him. He will be forever cherished, loved and missed.
